New details in officer involved shooting death near EIRMC

The investigation into the death of David Alma Giles is nearly completed. Idaho Falls Police now say that Giles grabbed the Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy’s shotgun and the pair struggled over it before the gun, fired killing Giles.

An Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigation into the death of Giles is tentatively scheduled to be complete early next week.

Giles of St. Anthony died at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center Friday morning following an altercation in the parking lot.

According to reports, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a 911 call regarding a medical issue along U.S. Highway 20 early Friday morning. The deputy transported Giles to EIRMC.

The deputy arrived with Giles at the EIRMC parking lot at 6:55 a.m. An altercation occurred at which time Giles grabbed the shotgun from the deputy’s patrol vehicle resulting in the deputy and Giles struggling over the gun. The gun was fired once killing Giles.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy is currently on paid administrative leave as standard protocol.

Idaho State Police, with the assistance of the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, has been leading the investigation. As standard protocol with all task force investigations, all information will be turned over to the Bonneville County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

An autopsy of Giles was completed in Boise on Monday. The results, including a toxicology report, are pending with no affirmative time of when those results will be available.
