Sage Raceway gets ready for weekend of races

Start your engines and keep them revved this weekend, Sage Raceway in Bonneville County is holding its annual Sage Blowout Race.

“We have a whole day filled with racing, cars running and smoke,” said Terry Ray, owner of Sage Raceway. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Ray loves drag racing. He has been interested in the motorsport since he was young.

“As a kid, I liked fast cars,” Ray said.

The love for the sport has carried throughout his life.

“Like I say, ‘You’re 18 again and you’re ready to open a can of whatever on somebody,'” Ray said.

Sage Raceway started five years ago.

“We started nothing here but just flat ground,” said Ray.

Half a million dollars later is how it all came to be.

“I mean it ain’t something you just sneeze at,” Ray said.

Ray said Sage Raceway has turned into a place where people can bring their families and race.

“We’re kind of trying to tune things up and we’re starting to get more and more spectators,” Ray said.

For the weekend’s events, Ray hopes to see about 75 cars come out and race. Before that is possible, the team at Sage Raceway has to get the track prepared.

“We’re sweeping, blowing dirt and trying it to make it as clean and as nice as we can for the racers,” said Ray.

It takes about 13 people to help run things at the track on race day. Even though Ray won’t be participating in this weekends events, he hopes those who do come out will enjoy the racing.

“Its something you’ve got to be serious about and I am serious about it,” Ray said.

Friday’s Test N’ Tune goes until 8 p.m. After that, there will be a Gambler’s Race. People have to pay $20 to enter and the winner takes it all.

Saturday gates will open at 9 a.m. The Test N’ Tune starts at 11 a.m. and the Sage Blowout Race will start immediately after.
