VICKSBURG, Mississippi (WAPT) — A lot can happen in the span of just a few hours. For one Vicksburg couple, both very, good along with some bad.

“The truck made a grand (exit) out of the parking lot, but we had a grand entrance of a baby boy,” said new mom Alexis Liggett.

Monday night, Alexis and Blake Liggett were inside Merit Health River Region in Vicksburg, waiting to give birth to their baby, when they received an alarming call.

“My mother-in-law calls and sees my truck going out of the hospital and says she thought I was leaving her in the middle of labor, and I said, ‘No, I’m not going anywhere,’” Blake said.

Blake ran downstairs to find his truck gone.

That’s where the story picks up in South Jackson, where 16 WAPT News was at the scene of a police chase from Warren County that ended with Blake’s pickup truck smashed into the Wendy’s sign on Highway 18.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Department arrested and charged the accused truck thief, Orlando Ciero, with auto theft and felony eluding. Court documents show the 31-year-old was on probation after pleading guilty to being an accessory after the fact in a 2019 fatal shooting. Ciero was sentenced to 15 years but had 13 years suspended. He allegedly violated probation Monday night.

“It’s just like a little bit crazy, in general. We’re trying to bring a new life into the world and you’re stealing stuff from people,” Alexis said.

The truck is now totaled, and the brand-new baby car seat a family member bought off the couple’s registry is also gone.

“It got voided before the baby was even born because it was in a wreck,” Alexis said.

But the couple remains in good spirits. Hours after the incident, Alexis gave birth to their baby boy.

“Mason James Liggett, born at 5:14 a.m., on May 16, and he weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces,” Alexis.

The family has quite the birth story to tell.

“All day we’ve been getting phone calls, ‘Congratulations on your baby; sorry about your truck,’” Alexis said.
