Wildfire open house promotes home safety

Pocatello’s fire departments are teaching people how to prepare for wildfire season.

The departments held an open house Saturday at the Indian Hills Fire Station. They emphasized the five P’s: people, property, pets, papers and prescriptions.

If you have to evacuate because of a wildfire, firefighters want you to have those five things ready, so you won’t have to scramble at the last second.

“We’ve actually had small wildfires here two months ago, in this area,” said Richard Nelson, wildfire prevention educator. “Wildfire season is here, it doesn’t start in June and it doesn’t start in July. It starts now.”

Nelson also made mention of a website that provides a tool to help homeowners understand their vulnerability to wildfire.

The website is called Wildfire Wizard, and can be found by clicking here.
