More police out this Memorial Day weekend

Local law enforcement officers are teaming up to increase enforcement of traffic laws in eastern Idaho this holiday weekend.

Police will be paying special attention to speeding and seat belt use.

Idaho State Police Sergeant Chris Elverud said the No. 1 seat belt offense he sees is people not properly restraining their kids, or simply not using seat belts at all.

In 2011, 877 Idahoans were killed in car crashes because they weren’t wearing seat belts.

“Just take your time and be patient, you’ll get from Point A to Point B, and law enforcement will be out there to really help that commute stay safe,” he said.

The extra patrols were made possible by a grant from the Office of Highway Safety.
