INL combines layoffs with sequestration

The Idaho National Laboratory said it will be combining sequestration cuts with current layoffs.

Back in December, the INL announced a workforce restructuring of 450 employees.

Those cuts would be made in phases throughout the fiscal year.

The first phase was completed at the beginning of the calendar year.

Employees were given the option to voluntarily separate from the INL before the involuntary cuts begin.

The next phase is taking place now.

“Now we’re onto the second phase, but we also have layered on top of us the sequestration reduction that were specific to only a few programs at the lab, the first being the safeguards and securities, and the second being the advanced test reactor,” said Mark Holubar, director of human resources.

Employees at those programs will also be given the option to voluntarily resign first.

The cuts will be a part of the 450 total number of job losses for this fiscal year.

Holubar said the lab does not expect to exceed that amount.
