Biker Rescues Abandoned Puppy During Race

Among bikes and men, sauntered into view a mangy, four month old puppy.

What started as one man’s 100-mile bike journey, ended with another “tale” he never expected.

Robert Taylor decided he would participate in the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho’s “2017 HeART of Idaho Century Ride” on Saturday, but it was only 20 miles into the race, when he stopped for a water break.

That’s when the pup appeared.

“When we stopped, he kind of just walked out from around the truck and I thought he was their dog at first,” Taylor recalled. “He came up to my leg, rubbed up against it, and just sat there next to me while I was standing next to my bike. That’s when my heart broke and that’s when I decided he was going to be a part of our family.”

Still without a name, the four month old pup is overcoming a severe case of mange.

Taylor wants to stress the importance of not abandoning unwanted pets. Because, unlike the one he recently adopted, others aren’t so lucky.

“There’s no food or water out there,” Taylor added. “There are other options. Abandoning them on the side of the road or thinking they are going to find a home is just not an option or a realistic story.”

In the meantime, it will take time for his new, little pal to heal, but he said each day, he’s getting better.

Taylor has a GoFundMe page set up to help spread the word about the dangers of abandoning unwanted pets. He said the funds that don’t go toward helping his new pal heal will be donated to the humane society: https://www.gofundme.com/aussiepup

Right now, the Taylor family is asking the community to help pick out a name for the new pup.
