10,500 people at Boy Scout encampment

About 10,500 Boy Scouts and leaders headed to Bingham County Wednesday morning for the Rise Up Encampment.

The encampment is a four-day event celebrating 100 years of Boy Scouts in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The organizers were busy Monday putting the finishing touches around the 300 acre grounds near Firth, Idaho. They were putting up tents, cutting the grass and getting the activities ready.

David Smith, chairman for the event, said the event has been a handful.

“It’s been a big job,” said Smith. “Just constructing three four-sided climbing centers is a major task.”

Smith and the organizers have plenty of activities planned for the scouts. They have hatchet throwing, BMX biking, zip-lining and much more ready.

It’s taken a lot of people, time, machinery, and patience to put it all together,” said Smith.

Both LDS and non-LDS Boy Scouts from the Grand Teton Council are invited to the event.
