Red Cross experiences shortage of blood

The American Red Cross is experiencing a blood shortage due to a lower number of donations this summer.

Traditionally, June, July and August are the slowest months because people are out of their usual routine. The Red Cross put out an emergency call for blood on July 9. Since the plea, donations have gone up about 15 percent, but many more are needed.

All blood types are wanted, but the greatest need is A-negative, B-negative, and the universal donor, O-negative.While supplies may dip, the demand for blood remains constant.

“The problem is people are on vacation, but the need for blood doesn’t go on vacation. There are always patients in the hospital who need the blood,” said Miles England, collections specialist for the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross has two to three drives each day throughout Eastern Idaho. Healthy folks over the age of 17 and who weigh at least 110 pounds are encouraged to donate.
