Volunteers count moose in Jackson Hole
Volunteers with the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation say Jackson Hole’s moose population has been on a steady decline for several decades.
Saturday about 60 volunteers braved blizzard-like conditions to count the remaining moose.
“We clock the exact time and the exact place. We have a GPS unit, most of us can now use our phones and we put all that data in,” said Frances Clark, with Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation.
Volunteers then feed the information back to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
“Professional biologists typically are up in airplanes to do flyovers and looking out for them in the sage flats, and bellows and that sort of thing. It’s very hard for the professional biologists, especially state and federal, to get into the private neighborhoods,” said Clark.
The Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation said they’ll know how many moose were counted Saturday in the coming days.
