UPDATE: Crews continue search for body of local man

The Caribou County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a possible drowning at the Blackfoot Reservoir.

Caribou County Sheriff Rick Anderson said his office got a call Thursday night of a possible drowning.

Anderson says two young men were on a boat and jumped into the water to cool down. The boat drifted away. One of them was able to swim back the other was not.

On Friday, search crews, including dive teams from Caribou, Bingham and Bear Lake counties, spent the day searching for the missing man.

The search was called off Friday evening due to weather, and resumed Saturday at 7 a.m. Saturday’s search ended at 4:30 p.m. and will resume Sunday at 8 a.m., with the possibility of Cash County, Utah teams sending resources as well.

“We had three agencies here Saturday and three agencies Friday — Bingham, Caribou and Bear Lake dive teams,” said Caribou County deputy chief Mike Haderlie. “Idaho Parks and Rec are also here with Bingham and Caribou.”

Haderlie said the search is made difficult by a high amount of moss and algae in the reservoir, along with strong winds interfering with the function of their sonar equipment.

It is strongly advised to wear a life jacket, even if you are a good swimmer. There are many things you may not be aware of about the water you’re swimming in, like strong currents and the possibility of getting caught on underwater plants.

Caribou County and the family ask for privacy at this time while they search for their loved one.
