Areva to build new facility at INL
Areva has been given the green light to build a new low-level waste disposal facility at the Idaho National Laboratory.
The $34 million contract was announced Monday morning and awarded by Battelle Energy Alliance.It will be built near the Advanced Test Reactor Complex.
This is a different facility than the one proposed to be built near the INL site, called the Eagle Rock facility.
The new facility will replace an existing waste-disposal facility, which will soon be closed, they said.
It’s reported the Areva project will include administration and maintenance buildings, waste-handling systems, and environmental monitoring installations, as well as more than 200 concrete vaults located underground for the safe disposal of the waste.
Mary Beth Ginder of Areva said the design of the new facility will take eight to 10 months and with construction scheduled to start in mid-year of 2015 and conclude in 2017.
