Madison School District seeks $2.5 million levy

Madison School District leaders are gearing up for the tough task of convincing taxpayers to vote for a two-year supplement levy worth more than $2.5 million Tuesday.

The district would get $515,000 in the first year and $1.995 million the second year.

District officials say the money is needed to restore three school days that were previously lost to funding cuts.

“The more time in school the more opportunity we have to teach the kids and help with their education,” said Varr Snedaker, the district’s business manager.

The district also hopes to make upgrades to some of its aging schools.

Unlike past levies, the supplement levy requires just over 50 percent of the vote to pass.

If it doesn’t pass, the district said it will face some serious challenges.

“We’ll just kind of carry on as best we can, but we’ll have to kind of limp along without that extra funding here,” said Snedaker.

But schools leaders said they’re optimistic they won’t have to worry about that.

“It’ll pass,” said Snedaker.

The levy will go before voters Tuesday.
