Iona won’t annex subdivision

There was a lot of applause at the Iona Community Center on Tuesday night after the City Council decided against annexing the N’ur subdivision.

The city was going to vote on the issue but before the public comment period was to start, Iona Mayor Brad Andersen called for a motion to deny the annexation.

The council unanimously approved the motion. That means for now, there will be no further action to annex the subdivision.

People we talked to described this as a win.

“I think it was handled the way it should have been a long time ago,” said homeowner David Taylor. “They finally realized that what they were trying to do was against public opinion.”

Taylor had previously told Local News 8 the 21 other homeowners in the N’ur subdivision would see 30 to 40 percent higher property taxes if the forced annexation was approved.

Andersen said now city leaders will “try to mend broken fences. We are friends, neighbors. We go to church together. That is the biggest issue.”

Andersen said he wants tax policies changed so city and county taxes are more equal.
