Ski company moves to Teton Valley
Sego Ski company has moved from Portland, Oregon, to small-town Victor, Idaho.
“Rent, cost of labor, so many things, all the economic factors made sense for us to be in Victor,” said co-owner Tim Wells.
Sego will be an all-around ski shop, where not only skis and apparel will be for sale, but where the company will manufacture most of its merchandise.
Co-owner Peter Wells said Victor is the ideal place for manufacturing, as its terrain will help with product testing.
“Being here, so close to the mountains is huge,” said Peter Wells. “As far as prototyping goes, we can walk out our back door and skid up a hill and be skiing. I can design something, go out and test it, then have it manufactured the next day.”
Teton Valley Business Development Center Executive Director, Brian McDermott said Sego Ski Co. is just the tip of the iceberg. Over the last few years the center has sent out letters to companies across the nation.
“We say ‘hey, have you ever considered doing business in Teton Valley?'” he said. “We have these wonderful natural attributes and great workforce. Why not come and visit?”
The center is looking to attract recreation technology and aviation technology businesses.
“Supporting all of those types of businesses will be machine shops that are relatively low footprint, but relatively high paying jobs.” he said “Ultimately it’s about the jobs.”
Sego Ski Co. will hire several employees before the end of the month. The company said if business and demand are as expected they will be looking to hire more.
