Sumo swimmer hits the ocean to take-on next record-setting adventure

He’s at it again.

When we first reported on world-famous sumo wrestling champion Kelly Gneiting, he was swimming across Bear Lake. Twice.

There, and back.

And now he’s back and ready to take on his next adventure.

Gneiting said he plans to take-on the Tsugaru Channel off the coast of Japan on Aug. 25.

He said the distance of the swim will be between 14 and 18 miles, as compared to his 14-mile endeavor across Bear Lake over the summer.

He said his swim will take place just three days before the 20th World Sumo Championship in Osaka. He competed in that event for 10 years and will be attending this year as an assistant coach for the USA.

The heavyweight athlete, who has also referred to himself as the “man of fat steel” said on his Go Fund Me account, “Be a part of Fat Athlete history! Help a guy with a wife and five kids, who lives paycheck to paycheck, put the biggest notch in his life’s belt so far.”

The Shelley native said he is raising money by selling his award-winning Christmas story which can be found here.
