Blackfoot school gets kids excited to read

The Blackfoot Charter Community Learning Center is trying to encourage kids to read through a new program called Reading to Success.

It’s a class contest where the kids are allowed to check out and read two books a week. If they meet their goals, they have a party at the end of the month.

This month, the kids celebrated their success with a drive-in movie event.

But reading hasn’t always come easy for the school. The school used to have a small library on a few rolling carts.

Now, thanks to donations and grants, is has a full room where kids can come and learn.

“Believe it or not, we started it about a month ago, and the totals were (about) 80,” said librarian Jamie Webb. “Now we’re to 142. It has doubled. The kids are excited. … It’s good to see that they’re excited because it went from not ever wanting to check out books to, ‘Can I check out three or four?'”

The program is designed to teach kids responsibility in bringing their books back on time, honesty and the love of reading.

If you would like to donate to their library, Usborne Books will match half up to 200 dollars of each donation.
