Big Momma’s House gets $5,000 check from Bingham Memorial
For more than a decade now, Pastor Jacqualine “Big Momma” Thomas has been working to help those in need in the greater Pocatello area. Thomas started Big Momma’s House for the homeless after she saw a need for change in the community.
“It really came to a supernatural beginning when the sheriff’s department called me to get a young lady that was up at Indian Hills,” Thomas said.
Thomas felt the call to her was made because she was so well known in the community and was likely able to get the girl into the police car, which she did. According to Thomas, in this community, “whenever there’s a problem, they always call Big Momma.”
But now the community is returning the favor. Thomas and the rest of Big Momma’s group have been attempting to get area housing for those in need for a couple years now, and with a little help from Bingham Memorial, they’re closer than ever.
Today Bingham Memorial handed Pastor Thomas a $5,000 check, a much-needed boost for their new goal.
The group is working to get a brand new facility approved by the city, which, if cleared, would build three apartment buildings to house those currently homeless.
While the check does help, they need a lot more. Still, Thomas said it’s making a difference.
The Pastor expressed her gratitude to the community for all of their help. “I just love every last one of you,” she said.
And although they are still awaiting the city’s approval, the team believes they will have people moving into the complex by this time next year.
