Salmon-Challis eyeing 3 backcountry fires
The Salmon-Challis National Forest is continuing to keep a close eye on three small fires.
The Waterfall Fire has grown to approximately 300 acres. The lightning caused fire started Sunday on the east side of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. It is burning primarily brush and grass in an inaccessible area within the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. It’s being allowed to “play” in its natural role.
The Trapper fire was called out on Monday, about a mile east of Highway 93.
And the Birch fire, reported late Monday afternoon, is about two acres in size. It is located about six miles upstream from the confluence of Panther Creek and the Main Salmon River on the Salmon-Cobalt Ranger District.
