Firefighter injured battling large Madison County barn fire

UPDATE 12:00 a.m.: The Madison Fire Department said a firefighter was hurt battling a large barn fire outside of Sugar City Saturday.

“We are saddened by the injury of one of our firefighters, who has a minor injury to his knee, and we expect a full recovery in a short period of time,” Madison Fire Chief Corey Childs said.

According to a press release, the fire started in a 1,800 square-foot maintenance shop. The outbuilding was similar in construction to a Quonset hut, containing spray-on foam insulation that carried the fire rapidly through the building.

A nearby home was threatened but crews were able to keep the fire and heat from causing damage to the home. Small explosions were reported inside the outbuilding.

Damage is estimated at $300,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY: Members of the Madison Fire Department are battling a large barn fire burning near Sugar City.

The fire burning the 900 Block of North 16th East was called in around 8 p.m. Saturday. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said the fire had spread to nearby grass and trees.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
