“No kid sleeps on the floor in our town” – Sleep in Heavenly Peace provides gifts that keep on giving

REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI) – A bed is a gift that keeps on giving, especially for children who don't have one to call their own.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a non-profit organization, gives that gift throughout the year using donations and volunteers, SHP provides bed frames, brand new mattresses, sheets, pillows and blankets to children in need.

A good night's sleep is vital to daily functionality, especially for children. Dr. Raj Dasgupta, Chief Medical Officer of Sleep Advisor, says, "When it comes to good health, I know we focus on exercising, we focus on trying to hit your goal weight, but what about sleep? You know, when you get poor quality sleep and quantity sleep, it affects every single organ in the body, especially when we talk about kids, they need it... It's so important for them. So it's going to help them by actually just having a bed."

The non-profit got its start in Twin Falls. There are now over 360 locations throughout the U.S., Canada, Bahamas and Bermuda.

Levi Shaffer, the Chapter President of the Rexburg Idaho SHP Chapter, brought the organization to Eastern Idaho. He says since bringing it here, the Rexburg Chapter alone has helped over 2,000 kids in the area from Island Park, over to Hailey and down to Blackfoot.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace has found 3% of children are without a bed. Although that may not seem like a big number, Shaffer says even one child without a bed is too many. "There's a need, and because there's the need then, you know, somebody needs to be helping these kids out... That's why we've been doing it for the years we've been doing it. And we always need more help in helping kids out," he says.
