A 65-year-old grandfather is on the mend after a viral encounter with a 2,000-pound bison in Yellowstone National Park, an ordeal bystanders say he survived by putting himself directly in harm’s way to save his young grandson.

It’s been over a week since Carl McDaniel was charged and launched into the air by the massive animal. Now recovering, McDaniel and the photographer who caught the attack on video are sharing the untold details of the split-second decisions and the strangers who came together to save his life.

A new crater has made its debut in Yellowstone National Park, filled with near-boiling water and caused by pressure changes just below the surface in Biscuit Basin. Monitors alerted scientists of seismic activity north of the Black Diamond Pool while Park Service employees saw milky water in the Firehole River downstream. Upon checking the camera footage, geologists saw steam erupting from the ground.

A vehicle crashed into a family-owned gift shop in West Yellowstone last week, sending merchandise flying and narrowly missing striking employees inside.

Surveillance video shows the moment a car drove straight through the side of the Cradleboard Gift Shop, shattering glass and sending merchandise across the store.

“It was just absolutely crazy,” said shop operator Jennifer Reinsch.

A wild and flat-out reckless moment in Yellowstone National Park has gone viral after a wildlife photographer captured a man walking directly toward a pack of wolves.

In early October, wildlife photographer Keith Allen Kerbs caught the dangerous encounter. According to witnesses, nearly 100 people watched in disbelief as the man continued towards the pack of animals, even firing off bear spray as he drew closer.

On Nov. 4, Fish and Game responded to reports of a black bear sow and three cubs that had been frequenting a Teton County neighborhood for over a month. The bears repeatedly received food rewards from unsecured garbage and other attractants, which prompted them to spend much of their time in yards and around homes. Due to their food conditioning and habituation, the decision was made to euthanize these bears in the interest of public safety. 

The park issued the closure after a challenging day on the roads. On Sunday, October 26, Yellowstone staff responded to more than 30 motor vehicle accidents, stranded vehicles, and slide-offs across various areas of the park.

Effective immediately, West Yellowstone Mayor Jeff McBirnie has resigned from his position. The move follows a public outcry over a series of highly controversial posts on his personal Facebook account.

The posts, which were confirmed as authentic by the Montana-based newspaper, The Bozeman Daily Chronicle, included statements such as, “I’m ANTIFA. F Trump and his Nazi followers.”

A 17-year-old hiker is recovering from significant thermal burns after his foot broke through the thin crust near Yellowstone National Park’s Lone Star Geyser, close to Old Faithful, on Monday morning. The incident resulted in burns to the teenager’s foot and ankle. He received immediate treatment from emergency medical staff on-site before being transported to a hospital for further care, according to a Yellowstone National Park news release.

This marks the first thermal injury in Yellowstone since September of last year. Park staff are currently investigating the incident.

Fire managers have raised the fire danger rating to “high” across Grand Teton National Park, the Bridger-Teton National Forest, and the National Elk Refuge due to dangerously dry conditions that allow fires to start easily and spread rapidly. This elevated risk comes as the 2,200-acre Horse Fire continues to burn in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, currently 20% contained.

Fire managers say even though things still look green, it’s the dry, dead timber on the ground that’s fueling wildfires.

A torrent of online commenters attempted to inform the San Bernardino rapper that the water from Yellowstone’s thermal fissures is not just incredibly hot, but also that walking away from the boardwalk is illegal.

At around 2:25 AM on April 21, the Teton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired near downtown Victor. The deputies determined that a Jeep and a Subaru had left the area together, the shots coming from the Subaru, according to the Sheriff’s office.

Deputies located the Subaru in Driggs, where they ultimately arrested the passenger, Jose Facio Garcia, for Attempted Assault and Carrying a Concealed Weapon while under the influence.

The park will continue to open through May with the east entrance opening May 2, the south entrance opening May 9, and the Dunraven Pass opening May 23.
